History
- The study of mushrooms is referred to as Mycology.
- my·col·o·gy (m-kl-j)
- n. pl. my·col·o·gies 1. The branch of botany that deals with fungi.2. The fungi native to a region.3. The composition or characteristics of a particular fungus: the mycology of rusts and mildews.myco·logi·cal (-k-lj-kl), myco·logic adj. mycol·ogi·cal·ly adv. my·colo·gist n.
- Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years for many different uses, including medicinal, hallucinogenic, poisons, and gourmet foods. This hub is devoted to teaching you a well known technique to grow just about any kind of mushrooms.
Ingredients
Items labeled are for the use in making (6) mycelium spawn jars. Mycelium is the "root" of the mushrooms. The body of a fungus, composed of many threads of tissue. Mushrooms do not reproduce by seed, but by spores. The spores germinate to produce threadlike structures known as hyphae. Collectively, a mass of hyphae are known as the mycelium.
- 1/2 Pint Ball Jars
- Vermiculite
- Brown Rice Flour (BRF)
- Spore Print or Syringe
- 90%+ Rubbing Alcohol
- Latex Rubber Glove
- Lysol
- Alcohol Lamp or Lighter
- Mushroom Spore Syringe (Oyster, White, Morel)
Prep Work
Punch 3 or 4 holes in the lids of the mason jars with a nail and hammer.
Combined Ingredients
- 3cups vermiculite
- 1cup Brown Rice Flour (brf)
- Just enough water to make mix moist.
- Maybe 1 1/2cups H20. It all depends on the size of the vermiculite.
Fill Mason Jars
•Fill Mason Jars with in 1” of top with
•Then top off with DRY vermiculite
•Replace Lid snuggly, but not to tight.
•Place Tin Foil over lids and scrunch up
Sterilize
- You can use a pressure cooker, or pot (w/lid)
- Add 2” warm water Slowly Bring to a boil Leave covered and simmer for at least 90mins (from the time the H2o boils)
- Then let jars cool COMPLETELY (usually a couple of hours)
Inoculation Time
- This step is very important! Sterilize!
- Spray Alcohol in the air, on your hands and clean table surface with alcohol
- Sterilize Syringe with a lighter
- One at a time Inject EVENLY 1cc of spore juice into each
jar tilting the jar as shown
- Immediately recover lid with tin foil ASAP
- The quicker you do this process the less likely contaminants can get in.
- Place jars in a dark,
warm environment.
- A good place is those cabinets above your fridge you never use.
- This is because the heat from your fridge
will help the colonization of the mycelium.
- Optimal temperature should be around 86F (but anything close will do)
10 Days Later
- You should notice some small white furry spots starting to grow at the injection sites
- White fuzzy's spreading everywhere!
- Just a little longer Remember PATIENCE!
- Some mycelium grows
at slower speeds
- If any discoloring is
occurring start over.
- Contamination will be your biggest enemy. (get used to it) That’s why sterilization is so important!
1 Month
- Your BRF Cakes should be just about done colonizing.
Dunk & Roll
- Once the cake are fully colonized you’ll want to soak them in Spring water for 12-24hrs to let them replenish there moisture.
- Cakes will usually come out of jars pretty easily (if not bang them on the fucking table upside down.)
- At this point contamination is less likely to occur
- Once you have soaked cake for at least 12 hours take them out of H2o and roll them gently in dry vermiculite.

Grow Time
Now that your Gourmet Mushrooms are ready to grow, I would considering visiting one of the promoted website and purchasing a cheap fruiting chamber. These chambers usually come with all the appropriate items necessary to grow your mushrooms in optimal conditions.
